I worked previously with the RSPCA Sunderland, Hartlepool and South Tyneside branch to create characters that represent the '5 needs' - Health, Home, Company, Behaviour and Food & drink. These became the 'Welfare Wisps'. The wisps were so well received and popular as educational tools that the RSPCA branch approached me to illustrate their first ever children's book - featuring those characters.
'Tot & the 5 Welfare Wisps' focuses on a neglected guinea pig and about how the wisps go about taking care of her and finding her a new home. The RSPCA has very strict guidelines on representing animals and not anthropomorphising them, so great care was taken to study guinea pigs to keep enough realism in the cartoon illustration we settled on. I had tremendous fun sketching up this book which involved layout design as well as pure illustration.
The book was launched during 'Guinea Pig Awareness Week' 2021. Bellow is a sample of some of the pages from the book. You can pre-order the book here: https://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLSdUVhieBpi.../viewform
"I genuinely can't speak highly enough of Scott. His creative work for the branch has been professional, engaging and full of character - it fit the brief and then some. In addition though, Scott went absolutely above and beyond on this project for us, offering his skills and expert advice every step of the way, leaving us with a finished product that we couldn't be more proud of. Stunning work! Highly recommended."
