The Bench
The Bench is a play written by former BBC Sports presenter Jeff Brown. The play explores race, class, the exorbitant money in football vs the cruelty of a governmental system that sanctions the poor. All told through the eyes of an immigrant footballer and a local single mum finding each other on a park bench.
Carole gave me the synopsis of the play and asked for some rough ideas for poster design.
We settled on an image that combined silhouettes of the protagonists on a bench sitting on arc of a football (to represent the world that was to decide their fate) with a Northern city in the background. I designed it so the elements could be used in multiple sizes and formats. Posters, flyers, banners and a stage play cover were designed for the production.
We even made a digital Christmas image for CaroleW production's social media pages.
The play was a great success and was featured on BBC News. The play supported 'Show Racism the Red Card' - an anti-racism education charity, established in England in January 1996 to harness the high-profile nature of footballers as anti-racist role models to educate against racism throughout society in the United Kingdom.
How Football Stole our Hearts
This show featured an evening with Michael Chaplin and Harry Pearson - two renowned football pundits sharing stories, I was asked to combine football, the North East and depictions of our two protagonists.
We eventually settled on a left field decision to have them mimic the Morcambe and Wise dance with the Sun as a football in the distance.
